Opinion can be split in music as to whether the ‘original’ is better than the ‘cover’.

The cover version has the same words and you can hear bits of the original yet for some it just isn’t the same.

Some consider such work to be sacrilege - just ask Rennie Pilgrem.

The breakbeat producer seems a little cheesed off at the state of his beloved art form which has been taken in all kinds of directions, not all of them good.

Evolution is a part of all music, after all, would dubstep be here were it not for garage and drum n bass before it?

In an interview with Data Transmission Rennie explains why he’s peeved at the state of the breakbeat scene - quite simply it has forgotten where it has come from.

“Most breaks aren’t really breaks. Most breaks clubs aren’t really breaks clubs at the moment. It needs to rediscover its roots, to remind people why they liked it in the first place,” he told the site.

This could be interpreted as the opinion of a man who knows what breaks is supposed to be about or the ramblings of a guy who can’t accept times change.

One thing can be said though, Pilgrem’s status in the game gives him more room than most to make such a bold statement and anyone who doubts his view can check him out at Glastonbury and make their own mind up.
