Partygoers in Blackpool are being warned of a new drug which is swamping the club scene in the seaside town.

According to the Blackpool News, Benzylpiperozine or BZP is marketed as a legal high and is said to have the same effect as ecstasy and amphetamines and two people have died from mixing it with the well-known club tablets.

Police in Lancashire have seized three loads of the pills since January and although it isn’t illegal in the UK to possess the substance, it is against the law to produce it.

Detective sergeant Paul Boyles, from the Blackpool police’s intelligence unit, told the newspaper the raids have centred on confiscating drugs suspected of being ecstasy but lab tests proved there was nothing illegal in them.

“Once they have been tested it would appear there is no offence in possessing this substance. Obviously if it has the same effect as ecstasy or amphetamine it’s disturbing,” he said.

According to BZPshop.com, users of the drug feel increased sensory stimulation, euphoria and a general feeling of well being.
