Deepest Blue: 5pm Interview
Deepest Blue first appeared on your radios back in 2003 with the self-titled house ditty ‘Deepest Blue’, an instant classic which launched itself into the UK charts at number 7, putting Matt Schwarz and Joel Edwards firmly onto the dance music map. Keen to repeat this feat, their follow-up ‘Give It Away‘ reached number 9 in the UK charts, proving that ‘Deepest Blue’ were no flash-in-the-pan overnight success. Following the release of ‘Late September’, their debut album, the boys called time on the project and began to persue solo endeavours and remix work while their stock was at its highest.
Reforming and returning with a fresh new single ‘Miracle’, as well as a new album out later in the year, it seemed a very good time for Gavin Leversuch to catch up with Matt to find out what Deepest Blue have been up to since they fell off the radar, and what other treats they have planned for the future.
It’s been a fair while since your last single ‘Shooting Star’. What have you been up to during the meantime in between time?
“Well, we’ve been on quite a rollercoaster. I has had a few hits under different names, including Dada with “Lollipop” and “The Drill” by The Drill on my label, Destined Records. Joel signed a solo deal with Mercury records and recorded an acoustic album.”
“Internal issues meant that we were pulling in different directions”
What made you reunite as Deepest Blue again? Are you back for good, or is it just a quick reunion, and will you continue working on your solo projects as well?
“After Joel’s team at Mercury records dissolved, we decided to give it another go and continue where we left off. At the time we should have continued with the dance vibe but internal issues meant that we were pulling in different directions, whereas this time we’re both on the same wavelength. Only time will tell how long we can stick together, but it’s all good for now.”
After working on your solo projects for so long, did you find it strange working together again, and did you find you were treading on each other’s toes?
“Not really, we pretty much have it sorted now. We both write and play, Joel Sings and dances and I produce and pull faces. When we gig, Joel works the crowd with live PA’s and I perform DJ duties, it’s great to see thousands of people singing our songs on the shows.”

What’s the vibe of the new album? Is it classic ‘Deepest Blue’, or have you gone in a new direction at all?
“It’s a classic!! We really continued where we left off; it’s all pretty much dance oriented and we’ve been trying to stay true to the Deepest Blue sound, if there is such a thing. It has all the live elements and the dance elements, all with classic songs.”
“I prefer speakers but… what was the question?!”
What is the one piece of studio gear you can’t live without?
“Colombian for Joel and Thai for Matt. Hahaha. No really, I think that if you were to send me to a desert island, it would be my Vintage Martin acoustic, but if you were to lock me up in a room on a not-so-desert island, it would be a laptop with Logic 8 and some headphones. I prefer speakers but… what was the question?!”
What are your plans for the rest of the Summer?
“We’re giging all over really. We’ll possibly drop another single after ‘Miracle’ but we’ll see how people take to us again and then decide what to do next.”
