Pete Tong Is Not Guilty
So another party has got out of hand, with 2000 revellers rolling up to literally swing from the chandeliers and cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to a stately home and the nearby village in Devon. And poor old Pete Tong is taking the rap for reading out a shout-out about the fancy dress bash phoned in by a listener on his Radio 1 show on Friday night.
He said “Tracey in Devon tipping us off on that, anyone who’s listening can come along, apparently, just say ‘hi’ to Marilyn Monroe on the door.”
But despite the mother of 18-year-old party host Sarah Ruscoe blaming Tong on the news last night (in a rather funny irate rant, delivered while surrounded by broken furniture), closer inspection seems to reveal that Sarah herself invited ‘everyone’ in a poster at her school.
Word then spread to social networking sites online, where, in similar fashion to the party in Australia that saw 16-year-old Corey Delaney become an overnight media sensation, huge numbers of eager ravers quickly heard the news.
It seems ridiculous to blame Pete for all the damage. I’ve sat in the studio at Radio 1 and seen the number of shout-outs that come in via phone and text during his show. Vetting these, or even banning them as some people have called for, would be entirely unrealistic and pointless.
It’s nice that Sarah’s parents give Tong’s show credit for holding so much power over ‘impressionable youths’, but really they are just jumping on a chance to blame the BBC. It would be outrageous if they got anywhere with their complaint.
It’s every dodgy club promoter’s dream to get 2000 people in fancy dress to just turn up and make merry, but even a mention from the mighty Pete Tong telling them to do so simply can’t make it happen.
Promoting parties via the social networking tools available on the internet and mobile phones is a growing phenomenon, and it’s not going to go away or be ‘banned’, so people better get used to it.
As ever, the party spirit keeps finding new ways to break out and nobody is to blame for the damage except those that actually cause it.
