Mr No Hands: 5pm Interview

Mr No Hands, or Dave to his mates, is making the most of the new multi-media landscape, producing quirky videos to go with his computer game influenced tracks.
His digital stick men have gone down a storm with the BMX community where his roots lie and beyond, drawing a loyal following when they are released on YouTube, while his unique audio-visual approach has attracted the attention of Ali B who promptly installed him as resident at his Air nights.
With his No Handed Music video-MP3 label just launched we probed him to find out what makes his creative mind tick, and just how good he is on a bike…
Which came first, the music making or the artwork… and what inspired you to use both as an artist?
“I was making songies before I went down the (arguably) artistic route. With the dawn of this digital age, it’s kind of hard to put across an identity with the music, which almost loses something in the translation. I’m just trying to offer some vibes to the overall release, in the silliest and only way I know how.
“The artwork largely sums up my take on things, being simple, and fun. I really go for that Punkish-DIY edge, where anyone can do it, after all, I am the worst artist I know! Since the response has been so overwhelming, especially within the BMX circles, I’m encouraging the other No Handed Music artists, Prato, Brotherman, and Drift, to get involved, as well as any other artists that want to give it a blast!”
Are your videos inspired by real events in your life? If so, which ones?
“Well, there was that one time I was taken up in a space ship… When I thought of the name, ‘Mr No Hands’, it took me back to being at school, sat at the back of the class with friends, drawing stick-man cartoons of ‘Keith’, the village idiot who could never clear any of the jumps at our local dirt-trails, and who used to smell funny. Those doodles are where the original logo comes from, and what led to the first animation. Though I can’t really take entire credit for it, so my thanks to Pete and Doug for creating the originals!”
Where can we hear you play and what should we expect from the performance?
“I guess Air at Cargo, London, on the first Saturday of each month – next one is 5th April - that’s the obvious choice as Ali B is the only promoter cheap enough to book me for a residency. Alternatively, you could move in to the house next door, and you can listen all day. Though my DJing roots lie in Funk, and Breaks, Air has pushed me to spread my musical wings, so its Folk, Dub-Step, and Andy Williams all the way…”
Your name comes from a love of BMX tricks, how good are you on a bike then?
“I haven’t rode properly in years. I stopped because our local council bulldozed our jumps because of complaints from dog walkers, about the washing machine used to help build the ‘big doubles’. That, and life/music. I sold the bike and got heavily into playing the drums. But the love is still there, and I can honestly say that the BMX years are my favourite of memories. Back in the day, I was fairly brave, and cleared some pretty sick jumps. I’m gonna try find, scan and upload a picture of me riding, to my MySpace page, now!”
What have you got lined up next?
“Well, I desperately want to go to Alton Towers this summer. Having not had time to write tunes in ages, I’m looking forward to a summer of Bass, Beats, and Bicycles, and by that I mean riding my new, ‘Duncon, Pibull’ trails bike. Also, I’m gonna be getting some of the ‘London Breakbeat Orchestra’ in the studio, to record some double bass, tuba, and whatever other stinged-things I can my no hands on.”
