Congrats are due to Soul II Soul founder Jazzie B who was awarded the title of OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List. He joins Norman Jay MBE as one of the few but significant representatives of soundsystem/dance music culture recognised for ’services to making us wiggle our arses’.

Jazzie has been an ambassador for the Princes Trust for ages too which might have helped things along slightly, but for more than 20 years his Soul II Soul crew have been rocking dances in London and beyond so that’s reason enough for us.

His annual Back 2 Life events in Antigua, with Norman, Trevor Nelson and David Roddigan, have become a great excuse to hear the best in music from London’s original warehouse scene… but in the sunshine, on the beach.

Which DJ/dance music face will be next for the Queen’s seal of approval? “Arise, Sir Cox” perhaps?!
