Amsterdam Dance Event Roundup
After all the fun we had on Thursday night, we still managed to get up bright and early to check out the conference on Friday morning, although we nearly got run over about 20 times by bikes on the way there. Bikes are great, but you are more likely to get run over by one because they are so quiet, and I just kept forgetting to look out for them as I’m too busy admiring the gorgeous canals and bridges. All you hear is the bell ringing and just at that moment you nearly have your toes chopped off.
The Conference was bustling with dance industry folk and we caught up with the Toolroom Knights guys from last night again, before hijacking our friend D. Ramirez and taking him off to find a boat for a canal trip.
I actually ended up making the guys trek all over the city for this. Poor Pedro and his heavy camera. Dean was also suffering with blisters – oh dear, I gave house music supremo D.Ramirez blisters on his feet!! Sorry Dean! He was so chilled about it though and neither of them complained.
We eventually found this really cool water taxi and got a trip on the canals which was gorgeous. Lucky us, bobbing along on Amsterdam’s canals with a Heineken in hand and chatting to D.Ramirez. He is such a laugh and we had a real giggle, and you’ll be able to check out the video very soon.
On reaching dry land again, we had a long chat with Ferry Corsten about his upcoming Full on Ferry party in Rotterdam. Sounds like it will be unbelievable. MoSTV will be there too so you’ll be able to check it out if you can’t make it over. He has some secrets planned for the event, which I can’t tell you about here, but you will be able to see in our feature after the event!
We bumped into Paul van Dyk in the street and chatted to him and decided we should go check out his set at Power Zone. So Friday night turned into some serious fun as first we were running around like crazy with Fedde Le Grand. We went to his first club Milky Way, for Flamingo Nights. Then jumped in a cab with him and drove to the next gig at a club called BG.
Of course, we kept getting stopped in the streets by sexy chicks throwing themselves at him and taking pictures. I became photographer extraordinaire and had to take pics for them on disposable cameras. Talk about style!
We then shot off to see PvD playing in this great club with a massive fish tank and gorgeous chandeliers. Everyone was going mental. Thank god we made it as we had to take a long cab ride to get there. PvD was banging them out and the dance floor was going mental. Lots of hands in the air.
By this point my feet were killing me, (payback for making the boys suffer earlier?!) Why is it we women insist on wearing high heels for such long periods of time? I know I won’t change this habit and have somehow convinced myself that I actually feel comfortable. But by the time you get to bed you realise how sore and raw your feet are. Oh well, the life of a woman who love high heels. I will never understand myself for it and will always do it!! And so hobbled to bed at about 6am.
Breakfast on Saturday consisted of croquettes and pancakes, but iit did not satisfy the hunger (that was so massive). It sounded good at the time, but I was still dreaming about the peppered steak we had with Gabriel & Dresden.
We went on a bike ride around the city. This was seriously good fun. I didn’t realise how liberating riding a bike could be! I never do it in London as I’m basically shit scared I might get run over and squashed by a bus. But Amsterdam has a wicked thing going on there. Bikes rock. (That is, if you are riding one and not getting run over by one!)
I was a bit wobbly at first, but who thought riding a bike could be so cool? They are so big and comfy and everyone does it. It is just a form of getting around. Lucky I had not been into a coffee shop first though, otherwise I would have ended up in the canal with serious bouts of giggles…
Speaking of coffee shops, I have to say they are very cool too. Going in for the first time is really weird though. I felt really dodgy. But it is everywhere and everyone is so chilled. There is also a rule of respect everywhere, so the smoking is not really in anyone’s faces. Loving those coffee shops!
Hooked up with Laidback Luke for another boat trip. Boy we are lucky and have some really cool DJ friends. He is really fun and quite cheeky. He taught me a great phrase which I love “neukend in de keuken”.
It has a great ring to it, but you will have to find out the meaning yourself! Pretty cheeky really.
Talking of which, we took a trip to the Red Light district. I thought it was going to look way more dodgy than that. It actually was quite cute in a weird sort of way. Red lights all reflecting on the canal, loads of people wondering around. If you took away the naked people in the windows it could be quite romantic. The windows are mad. There is a street for everyone with beautiful girls to old ladies, anything you want you can get there! Not for me, but was good to see it all and check it out. Weird how there is an English pub in the middle of it all. I wonder why!
Then onwards on our adventures around Amsterdam nightlife and ADE. We went to Club 11, on the 11th floor of the old post office building. You reach it by going up in this industrial lift with graffiti on the walls. Loved it. Very creative place and the views are amazing. It was a great spot to check it out some local Dutch Techno talent.
Then on we went to BG to check out Laidback Luke who was stonking it at the Stealth Party. Pedro showed me his acrobatic skills after we had stopped all filming as he decided to do flips all over the club. Not sure what people thought we were doing, but all I can say is, Pedro is a flipping King! Very funny. Think everyone thought we were mad, but that is no real change. It was a great party with great music, thanks Luke! So to bed at 6am again.
Sunday consisted of apple pie, beer and more croquettes. We wondered through the streets checking out cool vintage shops. Very chilled. We went to one last coffee shop – just because we could, then off to the airport for the quick fight home.
Thanks to ADE for taking us out there, it was wicked fun and we loved the city as well as the people. It is a great time to be in Amsterdam as there is so much great music and one-off parties going on. Highly recommended for next year. Very very very tired now and going to sleep.
By the way I heard a great track three times this weekend that I really like by Kamisshake called Dark Beat (Deadmau5 Vocal Mix). Check out on MoSDownload and tell me what you think of my personal ‘tune of the conference’. Wicked stuff!
