The art of DJing takes a giant leap into the future today. It’s a simple enough idea, but has taken a long time in coming. Finally though, Pioneer have won the race to come up with a DJ mixer that blends videos as well as tunes, and does so with a range of eye-popping special effects too.

Videos have come into a lot of DJs sets recently following another Pioneer innovation, the amazing DVJ-X1 deck that lets DJs play and scratch DVDs as well as CDs.

But clubbers may not be aware that the DJ still hasn’t been able to control a proper visual show. For example, Sander Kleinenberg is widely known as a ‘DVJ’ these days because he uses the decks, but he’s still needed a VJ friend called Mark with him to work separate equipment for his performances.

Now poor Mark may need to find another way to occupy his Saturday nights as the new SVM-1000 mixer puts the likes of Sander in complete control for the first time.

As well as chopping up video using the big touch screen on the front, DJs can bring in photos from a memory card, display text in time with the music and twist, ripple, crush, slide and drop virtually everything.

As you can see, it’s prettier than the average mixer too, with all sorts of lights and a big screen in middle. Kit addicts like James Zabiela will be rubbing their thighs vigorously at the sight of it (but then most of the big name DJ hardware fanatics, including James, actually helped design the thing).

The most exciting prospect from a clubber’s point of view is the totally new kinds of performances it will allow, pretty much changing the face of clubland as we know it!

Oh ok, so your average club may be a way off AV nirvana, and most DJs aren’t going to start mashing up custom made video content just yet, but the big clubs and festivals are going to become even more of a jaw-dropping sensory overload once DVJs get creative with this thing…
