We had to smile when we read the latest instalment of Judge Jules’ consistently good online diary. Jules is passionate about Ibiza and his packed night brings a lot of money to the island, so he’s in a perfect position to speak out about the frankly ridiculous behaviour of the local officials there this summer. If you haven’t been keeping up to date with our Ibiza coverage (shame on you!) you will probably still have heard about the club closures. What less people may have been aware of was the trouble big live events like the Galaxy and Radio 1 weekends experienced when trying to broadcast from venues in San Antonio. Local officials shut down lots of live events, using all sorts of excuses from licensing problems, crowd control and noise levels, but ultimately choosing to be difficult and unsupportive of events that offer unique promotion for the island. (The influence of Radio 1 even lead Fatboy Slim to once say “Radio 1 was the Ibiza Tourist Board for about 5 years”.) So Jules rightly says in his blog that preventing their planned broadcasts from happening at the last minute “seemed criminally short sighted.” He goes on to state: “the elected officials should never forget that there are hundreds of other destinations where tourists can make their holiday plans and spend their money. Forcing Manumission to cancel some of the bands in their ground breaking ‘Ibiza Rocks’ programme was an equally neanderthal decision.” Go Jules! He’s surely a voice these officials - who simply don’t know how good they’ve got it – should be listening to, be we won’t hold our breath. Let’s hope the “small minded mentality” Jules points out from the bureaucrats in Ibiza doesn’t damage the island we all love.
